Washington Park Botanical Garden Springfield, IL

Our family enjoys nature, so Washington Park Botanical Garden was a must see for us. Now, we visited it in February so the outdoor plants were more dormant at this point but we could tell that the gardens were well groomed and were going to absolutely beautiful later in the spring and summer. Our son loved the labyrinth and of course had to make his way through it. There are several statues and fountains that were beautiful even at this time of year.

The Washington Park Botanical Garden also has an indoor atrium that contains a bounty of beautiful plants, the orchids were absolutely beautiful at this time of the year. They even had a variety of small birds in the Atrium that my son got a kick out of!

The Washington Park Botanical Garden is a must see for all nature lovers, all year long. They have over 1200 species of plants from the rare to the common. It is a great educational and recreational experience for all ages. And just think, it will always be a bit different each time you visit! We are looking forward to our next visit!

Admission is free but they do welcome your donation. They are open from 12-4pm Monday-Friday and 12-5pm on the weekend.

For information on this and other attractions in the Springfield area you can visit the Visitors Bureau and request a free copy of the 2012 guide as well as learn about the History Comes Alive program which begins in early June.

Anyone who has parented a child knows they don't come with a manual, as much as we wish it did, so if you are like me, I keep reading and trying until I find something that works for me and my family. I feel you can really never have too much information as a parent, and I find other parents to be the most reliable sources of parenting advice, add in a medical background and you have someone I would definitely listen to. Mary B Seger, NP, PhD fits that bill--mom and nurse practitioner--and she has put all here parenting advice in a book called, The Parent Guidebook: How to Raise Happy, Healthy children with Advice from a Mom and Nurse Practitioner (Sophia Rose Press, 2012).

The Parent Guidebook is really easy to read and it had some great reminders of things to remember as a parent as well as some ideas I hadn't really thought of. She includes some great nutritional information and tips that I am implementing in our house. I am fairly conscious about my family's diet but it is a bit scary to think about the side effects of what she calls the Standard American Diet (SAD). It would make a great gift for new parents and parents-to-be.

Nestle Crunch Girl Scout Candy Bars

This year the Girl Scouts will celebrate their 100th birthday and many things have been planned to celebrate but only one is this yummy!

Don't head to the store just yet:
Not only are the Nestlé Crunch Girl Scout Candy Bars real, but they’ve been declared the “the world’s most valuable candy bars” by Heritage Auctions, the world’s largest auction house of collectibles. The bars are even worthy of a Renoir, and will be painted by artist Alexandre Renoir (great-grandson of the legendary French Impressionist Renoir). Then the painting will be auctioned along with the appraised first edition of the bars at Galerie Michael on Rodeo Drive at the end of the month to benefit the Girl Scouts. The bars will be available at participating retailers nationwide as single bars and take-home boxes. The three flavors are Thin Mints™, Peanut Butter Crème, and Caramel & Coconut.

For the consumers who can’t wait until June to taste the Nestlé Crunch Girl Scout Candy Bars, starting on May 9 they can go to the Facebook page for a limited time and participate in a pre-sale to get the product before anyone else.

Update they are sold out....so I am sure you are wondering why I am even teasing you by sharing this information well, they are just that good. I received a sneak peek box of samples last week, honestly I did not realize that theses candy bars are so hard to come by when tried the first one, or the second or the third. Thankfully they are fun size so having three or more was not that bad, it was all done in the name of review so it does not count, right?

I can tell you how each bar taste exactly like the cookie they are inspired by and I can also tell you how even the texture is a nearly identical match. Or I can tell you the truth, my favorite Girl Scout cookie is the Camel and Cream so I started with this one first. It so was amazing I switched to the Peanut Butter Creme, by the time I got to the Thin Mints I texted Michelle a photo of the empty wrappers and said Danger! Danger! Danger!

Maybe I was in the mood for chocolate, maybe it had been too long since I had tried a Girl Scout Cookie. Either way I wish they were not sold out so I could get more, but June is just a few weeks away I will wait just like everyone else. I can promise you that as soon as I see them on the store shelves I will be picking up a few, I am not going to let them sell out on me again!
