Make: Ultimate Kit Guide Review

Kits are a great way to introduce adults and children to new skills and technology and build a better understanding of how things works and of the world around them. I love kits for the simple fact that it walks one through how to make something and all the items needed to create the item are included or fairly easily compiled!  Kits are great for beginners and they are a wonderful way for families to spend time together. 

One of the best sources for discovering what kits are available is the O'Reilly's Make: Ultimate Kit Guide 2012 magazine and by checking out all the available kits available in the Maker Shed. The Ultimate Kit Guide covers over 175 kits, (most if not all can be found at Maker Shed) in a wide variety of types from music to toys, rockets, food, home, tools, outdoors, robots, LEDs, Siege Weapons and more. There is really something for everyone. 

I was able to check out the Make: Ultimate Kit Guide, as well as Maker Shed's Mintronics: Supercap Racer kit. The Supercap Racer kit is a tiny race car kit that uses a super-capacitor for instant power. The only outside tools you need are a soldering iron and solder. The instructions are found online and easy to follow. There are also videos that you can watch to see exactly how to build it--that is what we did.  It is a great kit for beginners, like us, but I can see that it could easily be modified and customized for someone who has more soldering experience. It only takes about 30 minutes to create and is a great parent/child project and my 4 year old loves cars and always wants to know how things work--so building this with his dad was perfect! 

I would highly recommend checking out Make: Ultimate Kit Guide and Maker Shed. You will be amazed at what is available as a kit and how much you can learn by completing one!

Build-A-Bear Workshop Huggable Heroes: Nominate An Outstanding 8-18 Year Old

When I attended the Build-A-Bear Workshop program a few years ago I was first introduced to their Huggable Heroes program and got to meet one of the young people who won one of these awards. 

Through their Huggable Heroes^® program,  Build-A-Bear Workshop recognizes and encourages young leaders, ages 8 to 18, who provide extraordinary service in their communities and around the world. The eighth annual search for these special kids is now on! 

Anyone, ages eight and above, is eligible to nominate a candidate by completing a form found on the Build-A-Bear Workship Huggable Heroes site or by picking up an entry form at participating Build-A-Bear Workshop stores. Nominations will be accepted through February 27th, 2011.

Ten winners will each be awarded $12,400 for their outstanding community service – a $7,500 college scholarship, a $2,500 donation to their special 501 (c)(3) or a registered Canadian charity cause, a Flip Mino video camera and an exciting three-day, two-night trip where they will meet the other 2012 Huggable Heroes^®.

So if you know of an outstanding 8-18 year old who is trying to make a difference, I encourage you to nominate them to be a Huggable Hero.

Cooking in the kitchen is not only frugal but it can be fun! World's Best Cat Litter has launched a new contest with a great pay it forward.  If you follow my site then you know how much I love animals.  I have adopted one of my pets from a shelter and taken in a few others who more than likely would have ended up there.
