f you have a child who has food allergies, you do whatever it takes to protect them from all possible exposures. Unfortunately, we can lock them into a bubble and control everything in their lives, but we can do the best we can by encouraging education and awareness, AllerMates are a fun way to increase awareness.
AllerMates are a new line of bright, fun, and whimsical character driven wristbands, dog tags and lunch boxes, created by a mom of a child with multiple food allergies. Allermates provide a fun way to help ensure the safety of our children when they are not with us--school, camps, parties, sleep-overs, daycare, etc. Their products are hypo-allergenic, nickel and latex free and have passed extensive safety standards and testing. The wristbands are adjustable and fit most children. AllerMates has created 14 fun characters that represent the most common food allergies, the AllerMate Gang characters are:
Professor Wheatley (Gluten / Wheat Allergy)
Pint (Milk Allergy)
Eggie (Egg Allergy)
Crabby (Shellfish Allergy)
Super-Cillin (Penicillin Allergy)
Bizzy (Insect Sting Allergy)
Dr. Strangeglove (Latex Allergy)
Drift (Pollen Allergy)
Detective Fin (Fish Allergy)
Soy Cool (Soy Allergy)
Teeni Tahini (Sesame Allergy)
Nine (Cat Allergy)
Beyond their products, the AllerMates website offers both parents and children easy to read and understand tips, facts and general information about allergies as well as lots of fun games and activities based on the line of AllerMates characters. The website also has a fully functional social community allowing its members free and easy interaction and sharing of the latest blogs, news, videos and information within the allergy community. You can meet the AllerMates Gang there and get the back story on each character as well as fun tips (did you know a peanut isn’t actually a nut … it’s a legume).
I was given a sample of the P. Nutty (peanut allergy) wristband to check out and I love it. The characters are adorable and they did a great job creating something that is fun and easy to wear for both genders. The snap is easy to work and stays connects so I don't think you will have issues with it accidentally coming apart. I love the bright colors that help catch the eye and really help bring awareness to the situation--it is hard not to actually look at a bright colored wristband on a child's wrist, which then makes you aware of the child's situation. I like that they have the option of multiple allergies on one wristband--for example, I have a life threatening seafood and fish allergy so I would need Crabby and Detective Fin on mine (the wristband on the largest setting did actually fit me, snugly). I am hoping they expand their line to include even more allergies in the near future. I also think the lunchbox is really great and the dog tags are pretty cool as well and sure to be a hit with kids as well!
AllerMates products can be purchased through their website, on Amazon and at independent retailers throughout the US, Canada, UK, Portugal and South America. AllerMates are a wonderful way for increasing Allergen awareness and helping keeping our children safe.
