Chicken Soup for the Soul Inspiration for the Young at Heart Giveaway

Since 1993, the Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books has been bringing real people and their stories together to touch, inspire and bring hope and encouragement to others. They now have over 200 books in this series and they are not planning on stopping yet. I love this series of books, they can really touch a person's soul and pull on their heartstrings. I have frequently turned to these books to find inspiration, as I know many others have done as well.
One of the latest books in the series is the Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inspiration for the Young at Heart--101 Stories of Inspiration, Humor, and Wisdom about Life at a Certain Age (Chicken Soup for the Soul Publishing, LLC, 2011) by CSS founders Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen along with Amy Newmark. Here is the synopsis from the back cover of the book:

Life begins again at 60!
These dynamic, humorous, and inspiring stories celebrate the fun and adventure of your senior years.
Inspiration, Humor, and Wisdom for the Young at Heart
You'll love these 101 entertaining stories about dynamic seniors enjoying life after sixty. Whether relaxing at home or travelling the world, married or single, working or retired, these folks do it all. Read about:
  • new adventures such a zip lining or taking college classes
  • turning back the clock by raising children again or dying your hair purple
  • finding love at 60, 70 or 80
  • new careers as writers, public speakers or even rock stars
  • how to handle a newly retired husband!
  • the privileges and wisdom of age--why those wrinkles are worth it!
  • new passion for music, ballroom dance, teaching, and even pole dancing
  • and plenty of comic relief from your fellow seniors
As always, this Chicken Soup for the Soul book meets the target audience perfectly. I have a few years before I reach those magical golden years, but I can imagine this would be a very conflicting time and realizing others are feeling/ experiencing similar things would make it a bit easier. I am passing this book onto someone who has reached this milestone. I am sure she will really enjoy this book!

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inspiration for the Young at Heart is available through bookstore worldwide.

Finlandia Cheese Review & Recipes

Football season is in full swing and so is tailgating and grilling before the games. One ingredient that is at every good party is cheese! Finlandia Cheese allows you to have your cheese and keep fitting into your favorite jeans & jersey, too. Finlandia's entire line is all-natural, lactose-free and hormone-free with some great options that are low in fat and sodium (their newest being their Lacey Swiss). They offer high quality, highly flavorful varieties including Swiss, Havarti, Muenster, Double Gloucester and Gouda and they pair perfectly with whatever you are putting on your plate!
Finlandia Cheese has paired up with Executive Chef of award-winning CulinAriane restaurant and Bravo's Top Chef finalist Ariane Duarte to create some wonderful grill friendly recipes that are sure to impress your friends. Here are a few of the recipes I received in the press release:

Jumpin’ Turkey Swiss Burgers
Created by Chef Ariane Duarte
Serves 6
2 lbs Ground Turkey
1 or 2 jalapeño peppers, small dice (depending on how much heat you like)
½ c chopped cilantro
1T ground cumin
1t chopped garlic
1 small onion, diced
Salt & pepper
12 slices Finlandia Swiss or Light Swiss Cheese
6 burger buns of your choice
In a bowl, combine all ingredients. Divide equally into 6 balls. Form into patties and place on grill. Grill on high heat - 4 minutes on 1 side, then turn and finish for about 3 to 4 minutes on the other. Add two slices of Finlandia Swiss and let melt. Then, place on your bun with your favorite accompaniments.

Ariane says: You can use Finlandia Swiss or Finlandia Light Swiss for this burger as they both deliver a distinctively rich and nutty flavor. The result is a nice compliment to the boldness that results from the combination of jalapeño peppers, cumin and garlic.
Grilled Chicken with Summer Tomatoes and Finlandia Muenster Cheese
Created by Ariane Duarte
Serves 6
6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
2T olive oil
1T fresh rosemary chopped
1T fresh thyme chopped
1T fresh basil chopped
Salt & pepper
2 Jersey fresh tomatoes
1 package Finlandia Swiss or Light Swiss Cheese
Preheat grill to medium high. Place chicken breasts in a large bowl and add olive oil, herbs, salt and pepper. Let stand for about 10 minutes.
While chicken is marinating, slice tomatoes into 4 pieces. Brush with olive oil, salt and pepper and grill for about 1 minute on each side. Remove from grill and set aside. Next, place chicken on the grill and cook for about 4 minutes, turning over to complete the cooking for approximately 4 more minutes. After that, top each of the chicken breasts with a tomato slice, then a piece of cheese. Continue to leave the chicken over the heat only long enough to melt the cheese. Remove immediately, platter and serve.

Ariane says: Finlandia Muenster is the perfect cheese choice for this dish. A mild and creamy, yet full-bodied cheese, it offers the perfect palette to exhibit the trio of fresh herbs featured with the best-of Jersey’s summer produce standout.

Finlandia Double Gloucester Burger with Russian Dressing
Created by Chef Ariane Duarte
Serves 6

2 lb ground chuck
1oz (package) onion soup mix
1 egg beaten
2t Worcestershire sauce
2t hot sauce
3/4c rolled oats
1/4t black pepper
12 slices Finlandia Double Gloucester
6 burger buns of your choice
2T melted butter

Mix first 5 ingredients all together. Form into 6 patties. Pressing your thumb print into each patty after they are formed.  Heat grill to med-high and place patties on grill. Grill on one side for about 7 minutes and flip once for another 7 minutes or until the temperature you desire. Add 2 slices of cheese to each burger and allow to melt while brushing buns with butter. Then place the buns on the grill butter side down for about 30 seconds, just enough to warm.  Smear some Russian dressing on bun, next add the burger and if you like lettuce, tomato and onion and pickles.

Russian Dressing
1/2c mayo
1/3c ketchup
1T red wine vinegar
1T grated onion
1Tchopped parsley
Mix all together. Refrigerate.
Ariane says: Hamburgers are the quintessential American mainstay, but I always enjoy the challenge of putting my signature spin on the classic. In this burger recipe, I use onion soup mix, rolled oats and a variety of other ingredients to deliver a juicy, yet toothsome bite. Looking for a cheese that could stand up to the boldness of this burger led me to Finlandia’s Double Gloucester. It’s about the taste, but equally about the texture and as it melts, ahh…so gooey and full of flavor.

You can find several other recipes using Finlandia cheese, including The Ultimate Cheeseburger recipe which has become a favorite at my house, on the Finlandia website. Be sure to check out their "fun stuff" section to discover other ways to entertain using cheese--there are a few great ideas that could be useful with the holidays and colder weather right around the corner.

We are a cheese loving household and that includes pretty much any kind of cheese--muenster and swiss are 2 of my all-time favorites. So I was super excited to try our Finlandia Cheese, as far as I can remember I have not tried out their brand but I may have ordered it from the deli and just not realized the brand name. However, we tested out their Light Swiss Deli Slices with our sandwiches for today's lunch and we all loved it (it is great on those Ultimate Cheeseburgers too). I honestly could not tell that it was a lower fat variety. I was also surprised at how fresh the slices tasted from the pre-sliced pack (sometimes when you purchase cheese that way, I find it to be dry and less flavorful, the Finlandia Light Swiss tasted like it had just been freshly sliced). I am definitely looking forward other varieties.

If you enjoy delicious, quality cheese, Finlandia a variety of cheeses made from the highest quality ingredients that are sure to be a hit with you, your family and your friends! Check out their store locator to find a store near you!

Blue Orange Games Review

Blue Orange Games has been creating high quality, award winning, eco-friendly (they plant 2 trees for every one used in game construction) games that are designed for maximum fun for the past 10 years. There have some very unique, creative and stimulating games to choose from.

I was given a sample pack of two of their tin games to check out--Tell TaleTM and Spot It!TM. Here are the descriptions of each came from the Blue Orange Games website:

Using cards with a variety of images ranging from the charming to the ordinary, encompassing a range of situations, players improvise stories.

Take a journey into storyland... Whether engaged in a friendly contest or creating a story together, you will love the way Tell Tale gives your imagination a chance to shine.
7 great family games and thousands of short stories to tell are included in this tin.

Ages: 6 to Adult
3 to 8 Players
Play Time: 20 Minutes
Contents:
- 60 Cards
- Illustrated Rules
Item # 00460

There is always one, and only one, matching symbol between any 2 cards in this party game.
Spot it and you win!

A sharp eye and a little bit of speed is all it takes to become a Spot it! master.

Ages: 7 to Adult
2 to 8 Players
Play Time: 10 - 20 Minutes
Contents:
- 55 cards
- illustrated rules
Item # 00410

I am impressed with both of these games. I like that the entire game is contained in a resealable tin so you don't have a lot of wasted space--makes them also very portable for trips and other times when have a game for the kids to play would be beneficial. The games themselves are easy and fun to play and easily adjusted to meet the needs of the players--for example, my child is only 4 so we use the Tell Tale TM sample pack to create bedtime stories--he is starting to make up his own stories also, which is cool. We also use both varieties of cards as object recognition as well working on the proper pronunciation of the words. For Spot It! TM we just use it as a matching game without the competition. Now, my nieces who are a bit older take the more competitive play. I love that there are more then just one way to play the game and that the entire family can play some version of the game.

To check out Tell Tale TM and Spot It! TM and all the other 'Hot Games for a Cool Planet'  Blue Orange Games has to offer--check out their website and follow them on Facebook and Twitter.  You can find Blue Orange Games in the online store and in various physical locations around the US and Canada--check the store locator for locations near you!

Victoria Chart Company Review & Giveaway

The Victoria Chart Company was founded in 2004 by a mom who discovered a reward system that worked very well with her 2 children.  She noted that it built their self-esteem, helping them become more confident and proud of the progress they were making. Her system worked so well that she took the time to create the tool for other parents and professionals to use with their children to help develop positive children through her process of Encourage & Praise and The Victoria Chart Company was born.

Using the customizable Encourage & Praise™ charts--designed for children ages 1-12 years-- will:
  • set goals to encourage both adult and child to work together
  • provide a visual tool from which families can see progress and feel good about achievement
  • act as a reminder and a focal point for all to work from
  • encourage motivation and independence
  • address challenging behaviors
  • provide a schedule to oversee routine required activities--medication administration, exercise, etc
  • provide stability to an unsettled environment
  • provide structure that children with ADHD, Autism etc can see and follow.
As a result their Encourage & Praise™ reward system will enable children to:

  • see how well they are doing
  • feel good about their progress
  • build great self-esteem
  • repeat their positive actions
Positive adult involvement is key to the success of our charts. Helping children to feel good about themselves can ease a parents/carers frustration and bring both adult and child closer together. All of which makes for a happy home.

They currently have 4 reward charts for children for parents to choose from:

  1. My Big Star Chart-for children ages 1+ to support behavioral issues related to toddlers--potty training, sharing etc
  2. My Growing Up Chart--for children ages 4+, ideal for preschool/elementary aged children
  3. My Credit Chart--for children ages 7+, encourages motivation and independence
  4. My Vacation Journal--encourages children to document their vacation through drawings, etc and reminds them to use sun protection
I was given the opportunity to try out the My Growing Up Chart with my 4 year old. He loved being able to help make the decisions of which activities to get rewarded for and it seems to really be motivating him to work for that daily sticker. We also decided to set a big reward when he reaches 20 stickers in a category. I love that the chart is reusable--stickers included and customizable--for example on of our additional goals is "I listened and participated in therapy and classes." The characters on the chart and stickers are so simple yet adorable--perfect for children.  I like that the stickers are numerical in this chart--so perfect for this age group and I love the gold star for those "gold star" type of days! I am impressed with how much that it actually seems to be helping keeping him on target, and seems to help decrease how much I end up yelling or nagging or simply stressed out throughout the day and he is sooo proud to be able to put his sticker on the chart each time--totally a self-esteem booster for him!

I am impressed with the ability of The Victoria Chart Company's Encourage & Praise system of charts to bring a bit of calm to the behavior area of a home, while boosting your child's motivation and self esteem. If you have a child between the ages of 1 & 12, The Victoria Chart Company just might provide the perfect solution for your home! Be sure to check them out of Facebook for all the happenings and maybe even a coupon code!

Ladybug Jane Review

Ladybug Jane was a result from a dream of the creator Jane Graves. The mission of Ladybug Jane is to teach eco-consciousness--awareness of our impact on the environment and to make choices that help not hurt the world we live in. Ladybug Jane quickly realized that one of the best ways for humans to make a difference in their health and the environment they live in is by choosing eco-friendly products--products that do not contain any harmful chemicals, etc. and she set out--with her friends and creator--to make a line of  eco-friendly lip balm. These lip balms are currently available in 6 varieties:
  • Groovy Grape
  • Wild Strawberry
  • Bursting Berry
  • Crazy Coconut
  • Vanilla Cupcake
  • Wacky Watermelon
Ladybug Jane created lip balms that are 100% natural, organic, vegan, fun and flavorful. They are free of artificial colors and dyes, phthalates, nasty preservatives & chemicals, free of nut & bee products (so they are safe for people with nut or bee allergies). They do not contain Petroleum or Mineral Oils. They are non-toxic and gluten free. They are made in the USA. They use Eco-friendly packaging, animal-friendly testing (aka No animal testing) and are absolutely wonderful.

I was given a couple samples to test out for this review. When I said they are absolutely wonderful, I meant it. I tried out the Groovy Grape and the Wild Strawberry versions. They smell like candy and have a sweet taste to them (they are sweetened with organic stevia). They glided on smoothly left my lips feeling moisturized. I love that these lip balms are safe for my whole family--believe me my 4 year old LOVES them as much as I do. I think they would make a great addition to a stocking or a kids (or adult) treat bag for a holiday or birthday party.

Ladybug Jane's website and Facebook and Twitter pages have lots of fun activities and information, so be sure to check them out.

Join Ladybug Jane on her quest to make a better Earth and check out her awesome, eco-friendly lip balm along the way!  You can make a difference with just "One Choice, One Step, One Change.

PhitGrips Review & Giveaway

Created by a self proclaimed germ-a-phobe, PhitGrips were originally designed for use in the gym around the grips of free weights etc. These palm-sized antimicrobial cushioned grips have grown to the 18 inches needed to cover one of the worst places for germs (worst than a public restroom), the shopping cart handle with the PhitShop.
Each PhitGrip & PhitShop are made with rubber that has been liquified, then injected with oxygen to give it a light, cushiony feel, formed into the proper tube shape. Then the entire grip is coated with an all-natural, mineral based antimicrobial agent that helps to inhibit the growth and spread of bacteria. You can tell when it is time to replace the PhitGrip or PhitShop when the smooth layer wears off the grip (approximately 10-12 months)

I was given a PhitShop to check out for this review. I am also creeped out by the amount of germs that tend to be on the handle of a grocery cart, but unfortunately, I do occasionally have to make trips in and with my child in tow more times than not.  What I love about the PhitShop is so compact and easy to put on (preventing germ transfer) and take off. I keep mine in my reusable shopping bags to it is always with me. My favorite part is that it is treated with an antimicrobial agent to really protect you and your children. Plus it makes the handle more comfortable. I think the PhitShop is fairly affordable--I am thinking I should get a couple extra, just in case!

The PhitGrip (for the gym) and PhitShop (for shopping cart handles) are available online. Using PhitGrip products at the gym and on the grocery cart handles can decrease your exposure to bacteria like e.coli, MRSA, and other Staph bacterial strains and keep you and your family a healthier.

It's So Easy Duff McKagan Review

I grew up listening to the "Hair Bands" of the '80's, including Guns N' Roses. I remember hearing about the tumultuous life many of "hard-rock" artist ended up leading as a result of the lifestyle that tended to go along with it. So, I wasn't a huge shock to read through Duff McKagan's autobiography (former bassist for GN'R and Velvet Revolver) and read about the struggles he went through.  His book, It's So Easy: and other Lies (Touchstone/Simon & Schuster) will be available in hardback on October 4, 2011.
Here is the synopsis of It's So Easy: and other Lies from the book's dust cover:

A founding member of Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver shares the story of his rise to the pinnacle of fame and fortune, his struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction, his personal crash and burn, and his phoenix-like transformation via a unique path to sobriety.
In 1984, at the age of twenty, Duff McKagan left his native Seattle--partly to pursue music but mainly to get away from a host of heroin overdoses then decimating his closest group of friends in the local punk scene. In L.A. only a few weeks and still living in his car, he answered a want ad for a bass player placed by someone who identified himself only as "Slash." Soon after, the most dangerous band in the world was born. Guns N' Roses went on to sell more than 100 million albums worldwide.
In It's So Easy, Duff recounts GN'R's unlikely trajectory to a string of multiplatinum albums, sold-out stadium concerts, and global acclaim. But that kind of glory can take its toll, and it did---ultimately---on Duff, as well as on the band itself. As GN'R began to splinter. Duff felt that he himself was done, too. But his near death as a direct result of alcoholism proved to be his watershed, the turning point that led to his unique path to sobriety and the unexpected choices he has made for himself since.
In a voice that is as honest as it is indelibly his own, Duff--one of rock's smartest and most articulate personalities--takes readers on his harrowing journey through the dark heart of one of the most notorious bands in rock-and-roll history and out the other side.

I found It's So Easy: and Other Lies to be an interesting read, especially having grown up with the music he was part of.  It really does just tell his story vs pointing fingers at others for their demise. He writes honestly and even bluntly and does not let himself off the hook. As glamorous as that life might have looked from the outside at the time--I am sure glad I did not live through anything like that. I am proud that he has been able to pull himself back together and develop good relationships, including a successful marriage (after a couple of failed ones) and is really being a part of his daughters' lives. I am glad that he has been able to become successful in the business world as well as stay true (and clean--hopefully always) to his first love--music.

It's So Easy: and Other Lies is a honest autobiography by bassist Duff McKagan which is well written and would be very interesting to people who grew up enjoying the music of GN'R and Velvet Revolver and to others who enjoy learning about behind the scenes of musical artists of all types.

My Thoughts: I had no idea my little rice cooker could be so useful! We have always used to just to make various kinds of rice so I just have a simple medium sized on/off variety of rice cooker. There are tons of recipes that I can make using my super simple version and their a lots that also require the fuzzy logic version of rice cooker (you know the one with more bells and whistles/setting options). I have tried a few of the recipes so far and have bookmarked several more to try in the near future. The Wild Rice with Cranberries and Pecans would make an awesome side dish for the holidays--my cooker worked fine for it. I am dying to try the Rocky Road Polenta Pudding but I need to upgrade to a fuzzy logic cooker--I guess I know what I should add to my Christmas List!

I definitely recommend 300 Best Rice Cooker Recipes for families like mine who love rice dishes. These recipes and your rice cooker can really simplify your life.

You can find the 300 Best Rice Cooker Recipes cookbook on Amazon and Barnes & Noble online and at Barnes & Noble stores nationwide.

Scholastic Storybook Treasures Review

Scholastic has long been a name that I correlate with a positive influence in a child's education. They are known to encourage a child's love of learning in all areas. Scholastic Storybook Treasures: Read-Along DVDs fit right into those goals. It is the #1 Award-Winning Children's DVD Series.

I was able to check out the Young Artists Collection Featuring Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin from the Scholastic Storybook Treasures series, with my 4 year old.

Here is the synopsis from the back of the box:

15 Stories to Encourage Budding Artists, Musicians, and Performers in a 3-DVD Collection

A Violin to the tale of overcoming stage fright in Shrinking Violet and the outstanding original The Dot, kids and parents will be entertained and inspired to tap into their inner artist! With celebrity narration and songs by Aretha Franklin, Zach Braff and more, this collection provides the perfect primer for young artists, musicians, and performers!

These DVDs feature--15 stories on 3 DVDs along with an Interview the Art Author/Illustration Patrick McDonnell, Spanish Versions of The Dot, Ish and Amazing Grace AND they are read along. This series is designed to support creativity, self confidence, and art appreciation. The layout to the DVDs are as follows:

The Young Artist Collection is a big hit at our house. My four year old has just recently discovered read along books, which he loves. The great thing about these DVDs is that he gets the read-along with more animation--I just might help even more with word recognition. Plus many of these stories are award winning on their own for a reason--the positive influence they have on the intellect of children. This set is designed for children ages 4-8 so I am sure we will be watching it many more times before he gets "too old" for them. I believe that the arts are important in a young child's life and I love that these DVDs help to instill a love for the arts as well as the love of reading in my child.

Each of the DVDs in this set are also available independently. Visit the Scholastic Storybook Treasures website for more information or to discover the many other titles they have to offer.

Thank you to Scholastic for my samples used in this review.  Opinions are honest, review by Michelle.

Recess Music Big Bully Review & Giveaway

Recess Music produces music that encourage children to develop good values and morals through their modern, fun, kid-friendly music. They have recently launched a series of children's music called "Best Foot Forward" that deals with an entirely relevant "course in manners" that reinforces a profound subtext and encourages children to be the very best they can be.
The first album in the "Best Foot Forward" series is called Big Bully. Big Bully presents songs that provide good solutions to violence and bad manners and focuses on promoting positive relationships between children.

Here is the description of Big Bully taken from the press release I received:

Featured artists on Big Bully include such kids' music luminaries as Milkshake, The Hipwaders and Renee & Jeremy. The album opens with The Uncle Brothers' wonderfully alliterative, two-beat country tune, Bully Bubba, explaining why bullies do the things they do and providing solid, practical advice: When you ignore them, they will go away! In up-to-date folk style, Nancy Tucker's Most Valuable Player pays tribute to doing the right thing, declaring "No matter what the scoreboard said, that kid came out a winner." The Hipwaders encourage kids to develop a positive attitude to behavioral consequences with their upbeat song Time In Time Out, while Mary Kaye's Mean Ogre features a really mean ogre singing about refusing to change. The country/rock Me Last Attitude by The Happy Crowd helps foster a gracious attitude that includes thinking of others first. Milkshake's colorful, rocking Enemies portrays best friends who, unfortunately act as enemies. One and Only Me by Janet's Planet and I Can Make a Difference by J.P. Taylor & The Academics emphasize self-understanding and self-validation. The Hill Brothers have fun the Vicious Vinnie, a droll minor key song in praise of "talking it out" with teachers. Susan Salidor's lovely ukulele waltz I'm Sorry offers a variety of ideas for how to apologize. More good advice for kids is given on Lyle Cogen's rap, No Put Downs, and Lou Del Bianco's Bad Day Today. In Leslie Bixler's lyrical Can You Imagine? the focus is on empathy, with children being taken through situations where they "take a walk in someone else's shoes. Glenn Colton shares more insight about bullies on Don't Bully Me, singing "Bullies are like babies in disguise." Renee & Jeremy bring the album to a peaceful close with their mellow Wishing Well, a song conveying wishes of peace, love and well-being to all.

It never ceases to amaze me just how much my 4 year old picks up from books and music. We listened to Big Bully in the car on the way to therapy and I was amazed at how much he retained from just one listening of the album. I am not sure he fully understands all the concepts yet but it won't be long and he will and I like that he has learned these little but vitally important lessons now even before he has to deal with bullying and I hope that it has given him extra reasons as to why not to bully either (other than "Mom said so"). I am amazed at the quality of music this album has for both the musical content and the lessons taught. I would definitely recommend this to other parents of preschool or young school-aged children.

Big Bully is available online through Recess Music, Amazon, iTunes and brick and mortar retailers throughout the US.

Saving Money By Saving Energy

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Ad Council recently launched an education campaign to help consumers save money by saving energy. Last week, some of my fellow My City Mommies got a chance to conference with Dr. Kathleen Hogan, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency, as she represented the DOE. Dr. Hogan spoke to us about how saving energy can help save homeowners money. This was a nice reminder for me, especially as the winter months draw near. She further noted more specifically how people can save up to 20% of their annual energy bill which would amount to $200-$400 per year on average. Dr. Hogan challenged homeowners to consider ’what else you can be doing with that money’?

Just like all of our other areas in savings, I think it is important to take it to the next level. I think we should all take a moment to read about these new resources so that we too can save on our energy bill annually. Not to mention that saving energy is environmentally friendly.

Here are some of the questions asked by the bloggers and answers given by Dr. Hogan:

As the weather begins to change (for the colder), thermostat use changes as well. Are there basic guiding principles about usage and placement of the thermostat?

Wise thermostat use can save a significant amount of money. Making adjustments of a few degrees while away from home will reduce the use of heating & cooling systems and can save $100, or more, on energy bills. This is an important point to counter misperceptions that it costs more money to get rooms back to preferred comfort level when they are not maintained at that desired temperature. Thermostat location is also important. For people who can move their thermostats, it is best to position them where they can reflect the true temperature of your home, avoiding direct sunlight and close proximity to heating/cooling vents. For more tips go to www.energysavers.gov/tips.

How important is it to identify leaks in your house and how can this be done?

Simply put, leaks equate to spending (not saving) money. It is important to realize that leaks can take various forms. They can be openings to the outside through wall cracks, bad seals, around windows and doors, or cracks in your ventilation system ducts. Some leaks are easily identified by simply using your hand to find changes in temperatures near common problem areas. Others may be more complex to identify and need tools that can display thermal views of a room. While some leaks can be easily fixed with basic caulking, others may require professional help. A quick online search for local energy auditors will help, but also explore your local energy provider, as some of them offer these services.

How important is lighting in saving money by saving energy; and can we expect to see further innovation in the products available?

Lighting is a significant part of this equation. It is important to understand that 90% of the energy that traditional incandescent bulbs deliver is in the form of heat, not light. Energy efficient bulbs deliver more of what we need (light), which also delivers an energy savings up to 75% over the life of a bulb. Though most energy efficient bulbs do cost a little more to purchase, on average you will still save approximately $50 a year when switching 15 bulbs. Another helpful step is a new package label that will be unveiled next year. Consumers will be able see the actual light output of each bulb, called “lumens” to help inform their selection. You can find out all about this new label system and how to benefit at www.energysavers.gov/lighting.

How can our children help in the energy saving effort?

Kids can be great examples for the rest of the family when it comes to saving energy–and reminders that ‘little ones’ can do ‘big things.’ Children can certainly do basic things, like turn off the lights. And since electronic devices have become common in children’s lives, they should also learn about energy saving features for those devices. Computers and other devices can go into standby mode for short breaks. And of course, it’s even better to turn off them off when they aren’t in use. Smart power strips can help you turn off many electronics at once and save more.

Is there a true and clear advantage to buying Energy Star® products?

Energy Star® products are developed and tested to meet certain requirements that will use less energy and thus pass along savings to you. When it is time to replace your appliances or other products, look for the Energy Star® label.

More about Energy Star® can be found at http://www.energysavers.gov/ and http://www.energystar.gov/.
