Economic Meltdown Book Review

Economic Meltdown: A Family Preparedness Plan for Disaster (The Fire Station Buddies, Inc, 2010) is a book by Karen McHale that puts true concepts of preparing for economic disaster in the form of a fictional story.

Here is the synopsis from the back cover of Economic Meltdown:
It's 2012--Did the World end yet?
Inflation in the United States is at 27%, unemployment at 32%. The dollar is only worth 49 cents and the DOW can't seem to rise above 3,217.  Gas is $15 a gallon and now there is no electricity. What if there was a meltdown of the United States financial system and the government isn't there to save you?
A man-made disaster is looming and is your family prepared for famines or runaway inflation that may send the US dollar into free fall. What would you do? How would you feed your family? Are you prepared to take care of yourself?
In Economic Meltdown, emergency planner Karen McHale takes you on a fast paced ride and shows you what could happen and how to prepare for it.
I think we all know the economic status of the USA has some issues, but if you are like me--I try to be thrifty and live within our means but have not gone as far as making a disaster preparedness plan, so what I liked about this book, it that it helps you learn small ways that you can implement a few changes now to help prepare you if a disaster should occur. Plus it is written in a form that is dry, boring and bound to put you to sleep. She also includes a Self-Sufficiency Preparedness Plan list at the end of the book to really get you started on the right track.

You can also find more information about the book as well and other information on the author's Economic Meltdown website!

The Golden Staff Sage

The Golden Staff Saga: The Pillar of Light (AuthorHouse, 2010) is a fantasy novel by Christina Neely that empowers teenage girls to find strength in themselves and be acceptant of others.
Here is a brief synopsis from the back cover of The Golden Staff Saga: The Pillar of Light:
The four gems have been stolen. El-Tepora is dying. The Gatekeeper is using the Pillar of Light to sustain the world.

Elena, an ordinary teen, must embark on a quest to find the gems and save El-Tepora.

In The Pillar of Light, Elena and her friends must travel across the world, fight fierce enemies and find the Weapon in order to save El-Tepora. Will Elena find the courage within herself to face the pillar of light?
I did find that The Golden Staff Saga: The Pillar of Light has some great positive messages that would be beneficial for teenagers and even tweens to hear and understand including: the choices you make matter, you matter and if you give someone a chance and look beyond their outer being you will find you have something in common with everyone you meet--you just need to look! With all the negativity these days it was refreshing to read something with a positive message!

The Golden Staff Saga: The Pillar of Light can be found on Christina Neely's website, and online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

It's TIme To Play Outside

It's Time to Play Outside: 101 ways for your young child to enjoy independent fun under the sun.

It's Time to Play Outside: 101 ways for your young child to enjoy independent fun under the sun, (AuthorHouse, 2011) by Miska L Rynsburger is a book of possible activities that you can have your child do outside to learn to do things more independently while getting the benefits of being outside!

Here is the synopsis from the back cover of It's Time to Play Outside:
Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, lamented that children suffer from a "nature-deficit". Children need to play creatively outdoors exploring, discovering, experimenting, learning to enjoy themselves in nature. I know we are supposed to turn off the cartoons but it can be hard some days. Additionally, corporate America has sent a call to parents. Young professionals are showing scars left from a childhood raised by helicopter parents. Loving parents are pushing their way into grown children's salary negotiations. Johnny shows up late at the office because Mom's phone was out therefore he didn't get his wake up call. This book offers 101 fresh ways for a care-taker of young children to take five minutes of set up time initiating creative, independent play outdoors using everyday objects found in the house or yard.  These activities should not replace time spent with parents. The value of love and attention from a parent is indisputable. Rather, these creative play ideas are meant to become one part of your child's day when she can explore and experience nature independently. No need to purchase more toys, batteries or DVDs. It's all within your child and the yard. It's time to play outside!

I love my copy of It's Time to Play Outside. It has great ideas for young children that will help promote the use of their imagination and independent play. I also found that many of the activities could also be converted into an activity that my family could do together outside (especially with Daddy since he doesn't see him often enough). I like the independent play aspect--because I can get him set up on an activity then I can get a little bit of time to get things done without him under foot--bonus for both of us. We have already done some of the sidewalk chalk activities, had bug races and set up a "speedway" in our backyard!

It's Time to Play Outside is a great book for parents with young children to help find activities for them to do, especially while school is out!

Thank you to It's Time to Play Outside for my sample used in this review.  Opinions are honest, review by Michelle.

Tour de You Swirling Circles of Freedom Book Review

Tour de You: Swirling Circles of Freedom
Tour de You: Swirling Circles of Freedom (AuthorHouse, 2010) is an inspirational book for designed for kid athletes, by sports psychologist K.C. Wilder, Ph.D.

Here is the synopsis of Tour de You: Circles of Freedom from the back of the book:
Tour de You: Swirling Circle of Freedom was created with K.C.Wilder, Ph.D.'s children in mind. She searched for an inspirational sports themed book for her two boys who are seven and five, and did not find the message that she wanted to pass along to her children. After her initial search she decided that with the input from her boys that she could write a book of her own that motivated them to always do their best.

Tour de You: Swirling Circle of Freedom may have been written to inspire children athletes but in my opinion would be a great gift of encouragement for athletes of all ages and non-athletes alike--we all have goals to reach and obstacles to overcome. The message is abundantly clear and the vivid graphics really enhance that message!  My child has lots of obstacles to overcome and I love the quick inspirational message that I can hopefully instill in him through frequent readings of this book!

Marilyn is Moving Book Review

Marilyn is Moving

Marilyn is Moving! (AuthorHouse, 2010) is a children's book by Irene Agapion-Palamaris about a little girl named Marilyn, whose family sells their home and has to move. At first, Marilyn is not happy about the move, but then she joined her Mom & Dad in the adventure of deciding where to move to next. In the end, Marilyn realizes that it isn't the house that makes the home but the people who live in it.

Marilyn is Moving! is a sweet children. It would be a great book for all kids, but I could see big benefits for reading this book to children who are facing a move to a new home!

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music Review & Giveaway

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music: The Inspirational Stories behind 101 of Your Favorite Country Songs

Songs usually tell a story, especially when it comes to Country Music. I don't know about you but I have often wondered what the story/inspirations behind some of my favorite songs was, there just had to be something that occurred that made the song writer jot down that specific set of lyrics.
Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music (Chicken Soup for the Soul Publishing LLC (Distributed by Simon & Schuster), 2011), compiled by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen & Randy Rudder, gives us a look at the inspiration behind 101 favorite Country Songs. The 101 songs include recent hits and golden oldies--each includes the story behind and the entire lyrics to the completed song.

Some of the 101 songs include:
  • I Hope You Dance
  • Smokey Mountain Rain
  • Gentle on my Mind
  • The River
  • Wind Beneath My Wings
  • He Stopped Loving Her Today
  • Long Black Train
  • This One's For the Girls
  • The Dance
  • Coward of the County
  • Holes in the Floor of Heaven
  • Jesus Take the Wheel
  • The Devil Went Down to Georgia\
  • Something in Red
  • Mr Bojangles
  • Unanswered Prayers
I am love both Country Music and the Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books. I think that they pair up perfectly. I have loved reading through my copy of Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music. So many times I have found that a song that already has so much meaning without knowing the inspiration behind the lyrics is even more inspirational after you read about how the song came about. like Jan Howard's "My Son" which I could never listen to without tearing up and now that I know the background, I need a tissue!
Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music is the perfect book for every Country Music lover out there--knowing the background will add so much more to your song experience!

I'm Nobody: My Mother Said It; I No Longer Believe It Review

I'm Nobody: My Mother Said It; I No Longer Believe It
I' m Nobody: My Mother Said It; I No Longer Believe It (iUniverse, 2010) is a brutally honest memoir by Erma Steppe about her years of physical & emotional abuse, neglect, foster homes and more through her journey to coming to terms with her childhood and overcoming the obstacles they created in her life.

Here is they synopsis for the back cover of I'm Nobody:
As sixteen-year-old Erma Steppe stood in a one-room apartment over a bar in Columbus, Ohio, her mother said to her, "You are nobody." With no money, no clothes, and a rumbling stomach, Erma retreated into herself as her angry and intoxicated mother continued a familiar rant. Erma had always been her victim.

In her poignant autobiography, Erma Steppe shares her heartbreaking story of a life shaped by desperate attempts to hear the words "I love you" from her mother. Abandoned as a toddler, Erma's quest for love would lead her through years of abuse, neglect, broken glass, blood, and black eyes- through an uncertain childhood spent in and out of children's homes and foster homes. In her struggle to find her mother and reconcile her past, Erma embarks on an unforgettable journey through the darkness of abuse to reach a new life on the other side where she would eventually learn to heal, forgive, and most importantly, feel safe and loved.

I'm Nobody offers a brutally honest glimpse into what it is like to grow up without a mother's love and how one woman reached from within and found the courage to survive despite facing insurmountable odds.
I found I'm Nobody emotionally difficult to read but very inspirational. It was hard to read, what all the author went through as a child even though I know full well that things like this occur everyday all over the world. It was encouraging to see how she was able to overcome the wounds of her childhood to become a person who can realize her own worth. I could see that reading this book could be very therapeutic and inspirational to those who also have felt like 'Nobody' at some point during their lives.

I'm Nobody: My Mother Said It; I No Longer Believe It can be found online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

168 Hours You Have More Time Than You Think Review

168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think

168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think (Portfolio Penguin, 2011) is a book by Laura Vanderkam that focuses on time management and rethinking that there aren't enough hours in the day.
Here is the synopsis for the back cover of 168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think:
It's an unquestioned truth of modern life: We are starved for time. We tell ourselves we'd like to read more, get to the gym regularly, try new hobbies, and accomplish all kinds of goals. But then we give up because there just aren't enough hours to do it all. Or if we don't make excuses, we make sacrifices--taking time out from essential things to try to fit it all in.
There has to be a better way...and Laura Vanderkam has found one. After interviewing dozens of successful, happy people, she realized that they allocate their time differently than most of us. Instead of letting the daily grind crowd out the important stuff, they start by making sure there's time for the important stuff. When plans go wrong and they run out of time, only their lesser priorities suffer.
Vanderkam shows that with a little examination and prioritizing, you'll find it is possible to sleep eight hours a night, exercise five days a week, and take piano lessons without giving up quality time for work, family, and other things that really matter.

I was given a copy of 168 Hours to read for this review. I frequently find myself wishing that I had more time in the day, so I was excited to see what this author recommended. I liked the idea of looking at the entire week, hour by hour--all 168 of them. The book was a great reminder of to look again at what is important to you and what is not as important and to try to focus on the important things first. Unfortunately, there were many of her tips that are not feasible for my situation, financially, but I could see beyond those tips to the underlying goal of the book--look at your current schedule, item by item, determine what is important and then reschedule your week starting with what is most important (for me, I have to schedule in the inflexibles--my son's therapies (which are #1 priority for me anyway) & the unfortunate drive time required to get there--then move onto priorities). It has been very interesting to look at where my time is going and then to start to figure out how to rearrange it to meet some of my and my families goals.

168 Hours is available everywhere quality books are sold. You can discover more information about the author and the book as well as print out a 168 hour week spreadsheet--so you can chart and reorganize your week and much more on the My 168 Hours website.

Thank you to 168 Hours for my sample used in this review.  Opinions are honest, review by Michelle.

Zippity Doo's Head Lice Prevention Review

School is out for the summer but unfortunately that doesn't necessarily mean that so is the risk of lice. Unfortunately, those darn lice tend to be equal opportunity predators, they like people of all types and all times of year so the best thing you can do is try to prevent them the best you can.

Zippity Doo's is a line of 'Children's Daily Use Hair Care Products the Help Prevent Lice!' AND they do it mildly, safely (Paraben & SLS Free) and effectively, without harsh chemicals.

Zippity Doo's recommends you using their Zippity Doo's Shampoo and Zippity Doo's Conditioner as your first line of defense, then start each morning with Zippity Doo's Leave-In Detangler or Zippity Doo's Styling Gel to add a fresh layer of defense before they go off for the day. Then use the Zippity Doo's Shield Spray on surfaces that may harness lice, nits and other insects. **Please note: Each Zippity Doo's product is linked directly to it's details page on the Zippity Doo's website for full information on each item**

I was given a bottle of each product to try out with my child. I love the idea of lice prevention without all the nasty chemicals that tend to go along with the treatment, and the fact that it is so child friendly and safe for daily use is a huge bonus. I find that they leave my child's hair feeling & smelling clean & fresh. I really like the natural smell of the oils that make up these products, they sort of remind me of natural bug repellents with a bit nice fragrance--but I have to admit, it would be a great bonus if it does help keep mosquitoes away as well.

This Head Lice Prevention provides you the ability to give your child a healthy scalp and hair all while keeping the dreaded lice away!

If you are interested in the Zippity Doo's products, they can be found on Amazon.

EnDangerbles Music Review & Giveaway

Endangerbles

We were given the opportunity to check out the EnDangerbles music CD. It's upbeat kid-friendly music and lyrics (by Fred Bogert), which teaches about extinction and endangered animals, plus the all the adorable critters showcased on the album cover, inspired me to look further into to just who The EnDangerbles are.

Here is what I discovered (from the EnDangerbles website):

The EnDangerbles is a character driven intellectual property created to educate kids of all ages through creative entertainment about the wonderful world of animals, specifically relating to those that are endangered, threatened, or vulnerable.

Each EnDangerble character is based on, or represents a specific species that is or has been on the endangered list. With the live action/ animated television show, and all of the creative licensed products, we can generate great awareness and excitement about the incredible animal kingdom.

The EnDangerbles has an interactive, kid-safe website, where the kids can sign up to become Official Deputy EnDangerbles for free! Once they become Deputy EnDangerbles they can:
  • Play Games
  • Download Fun Stuff
  • Color Online
  • See Real Animals
  • Receive their very own email
  • Plus, when you select 'SSA' as how you heard about the site you will receive and email with a link for a free download!
I love that each of the character is based off an endangered animal--the designers did a great job of making the characters fun, adorable and educational all at the same time. Some of the characters include:
  • Khul the Tiger
  • Milton the Baby Orangutan
  • Bucksnort III the Indian Rhino
  • Sasha the Baby Seal
  • Ulysses the Bald Eagle
  • Mrs Scarlett the Scarlet Macaw
  • plus others and more in the process!
My son is now a Deputy EnDangerble and has been working on the coloring pages--but his favorite part is learning about all the different animals. Khul is his favorite character (it fits his personality). We both enjoy the CD--we listen to it a lot in our car--the songs are cheerful and upbeat (there is an awesome song for girls called 'Girls Rock & Rule')!  The CD case also teaches you the secret EnDangerble handshake.

You can find the EnDangerbles Music CD and Plushies of some of the characters (those listed above are available) on the EnDangerbles Online Store

To get the word out even more about the EnDangerbles--One (1) My Springfield Mommy reader will receive a copy of the EnDangerbles music CD AND a plushie of one of the characters listed above (winners choice). The contest is open to US and Canada residents!

Giveaway will end at 8pm on Sunday, July 3rd
