Create a Keepsake Box with VoiceQuilt & Giveaway

I had the opportunity to try making a VoiceQuilt.  This is a simple and yet great way to create voice recordings for someone you care about and have it deliver to them in very nice packaging like a beautifully crafted keepsake box, on an audio CD or iTunes-friendly USB drive.  They then have the sound of the groups or individuals voice, accent and laughter to listen to and cherish for many years to come.

The VoiceQuilt website is very user friendly and easy to follow, you do not need any extra software (really all you need is internet access & a telephone).  It gives great ideas on what to say when you are recording you message to someone.  I put some thoughts onto paper before I called to make it easier once the recording began.  

The cost for this very memorable gift is quite reasonable.  For the phone number for 10 days for friends and family to call into is $19.95.  Then you have the choice of media to play these recording. You can choose from several Keepsake Boxes that will play the recordings when opened (like a music box), which retail for $59 and up or choose a simpler options of a CD (with various case options) or USB Drive, which retail for $19.00 and up. In my opinion, very reasonable for a true gift from the heart!

Once you create an account on VoiceQuilt, you can then create a Project. They walk you through setting up your project to meet the time frame you would like the VoiceQuilt to be delivered to your party. They walk you through creating an e-mail to send to friends and family with the phone number and code they will use when calling in to leave their message and it even takes you through the steps to create the welcome greeting they will hear when they dial into the number.  We also received several update e-mails as your friends and family leave their messages, and reminders as to how much time you have remaining to keep you on target. You can also check the status of your e-mails and recordings on the website so you can easily track progress of the project.  

As the recordings are coming into your project phone number they will appear on the website where you can listen and organize them.  You will then modify the title of the recordings and put them in the order you wish them to be in.  At this time editing is not available, but they note it will be available in the future (callers will have the option of listening to the message they left and then choosing to replace it (up to 3 times) or save it.  You can also upload music to your project which adds a nice touch to the VoiceQuilt. 

Once your project is complete and you are happy with the titles of the messages and the order, you will finalize your project.  At this point the website walks you through choosing how you would like your VoiceQuilt packaged and delivered.  One other nice feature is that you can download the VoiceQuilt to your PC and listen to it also and keep it to share with others later free of charge.

The full process was easy and enjoyable.  We did one for my mother-in-law as a gift.  Each of her children, grandchildren, husband and sister left messages for her Voice Quilt.  We were given several days of recording time and the audio CD with the leather case (which was a super nice case & we added a picture of her with her grandchildren to the cover) to go try out VoiceQuilt for this review and it turned out perfect.  It was delivered in plenty of time and we were able to give my mother-in-law this memorable gift last weekend.  She loved it.  She said it made her cry and she would cherish it always. She now will always have those sweet messages from her family whenever she needs to feel close to them. 

The VoiceQuilt is an amazing gift that will be cherished like no other. It is perfect for just about anyone. I would make a great gift to a parent or grandparent so they will always have a little bit of their family/friends with them at all times. I know I would absolutely love to have my 4 year old son's voice on a recording, I know that would mean the world to me! I am looking forward to watching the progress that VoiceQuilt makes as their business grows--ie editing features etc.  A VoiceQuilt will definitely get you bonus points in the heart of the loved one you give one to!

Southern Living Big Book of Cupcakes

 

 

Cupcakes are everywhere! They have gone beyond the kids' classroom and bake sales and have become part of the elegant and elaborate. It is quite common to see cupcakes as wedding cakes  and at other black tie affairs. Cupcakes are no longer, simply a basic cake with a little frosting spread on top, they are now elaborate works of art! 

Now comes the challenge, just how are we, the average Jane, supposed to create these delightful little works of art? Well, luckily, we have help! Southern Living has teamed up (again) with celebrated baker Jan Moon to create a book for those of us who would love to make beautiful cupcakes but are quite sure how (and for you experts out there who just want some new recipes & design ideas), called Southern Living Big Book of Cupcakes: 150 brilliantly delicious dreamcakes (Little cakes that make you happy!) (Oxmoor House, 2011).

I was given a copy of the Southern Living Big Book of Cupcakes to review. I love to bake, so I was super excited to see this book and I was not disappointed. I have made cupcakes many times throughout my life but I always felt a bit intimidated by the decorating aspect of them and this book breaks down to the basics for me, from her section called "Cupcakes 101" to the "baker's secrets" scattered throughout the book. I love that many of the recipes have a "flip it" option that gives you ideas on how to tweak the recipe/decorations to create an entirely new themed cupcake.

I love that there are cupcakes and designs for most every occasion that I can think of. I have the cupcakes I want to make for my son's next birthday already picked out (Under The Big Top), I would never even though about doing something like that around the edges prior to looking at this book--so simple yet perfect for a little boy. Some of the cupcake recipes/designs are pretty unique, such as the Maple Bacon, which I am quite tempted to try (besides I can "flip it" to maple nut by switching the bacon to nuts or do a combo to try out the recipe). Honestly, my "want to try" list is super long--it's a good thing I frequently have potlucks and bake sales that I need to take things too!
