Equal Exchange Fair Trade Coffee Review

Equal Exchange, Inc got its start in 1986 with a vision of empowering small farmer co-ops to use sustainable farming methods and provide consumers with high quality, fairly traded and organic products. They have done just that. They started with fairly traded coffee from Nicaragua and have added other coffees, teas, chocolates, bananas and snacks from all over the world.
I was recently able to try a couple of varieties of Equal Exchange Coffees, Organic Mind, Body & Soul and Organic French Roast. These are only 2 of the many varieties of Equal Exchange Fair Trade Coffees available. Here are some details about the Equal Exchange Coffees:
  • All are 100% Arabica beans
  • They are 100% Fair Trade (not just a small percent)
  • They are purchased direct from small farmers
  • The coffee is grown using organic means and using care to protect the environment
  • Available in smaller packages or in bulk 5 lb bags
  • Available in whole bean or drip grind options
  • Can be purchased directly from Equal Exchange Shop or via natural foods store throughout the country
I was able to try out 2 Equal Exchange Coffees. The Organic Mind, Body & Soul is described as a post-roast blend of Medium and Vienna Roasts, with butterscotch, vanilla custard, pecan & milk chocolate aromas and a balanced cocoa, caramelized sugar and malt flavor and a dark chocolate, walnut and brown sugar aftertaste. I found it smooth, delicious and comforting (my favorite of the two). The Organic French Roast is described as a pre-roast French blend--intensely dark and full bodied, with smoky, vanilla and almond butter aromas and flavors a balance of sweet, dark chocolate, smoky & caramelized sugar and a prolonged, bittersweet aftertaste.  I found it smooth and strong but not bitter--the way my husband enjoys his coffee (this was definitely his favorite)!

Equal Exchange Products are Fairly Traded allowing small farmers, around the world, to make a better living and, as evidenced by the 2 coffees I tried, high quality products. Your purchase of an Equal Exchange Product can impact the world in a big way!
