Stover

Stover (Helping Words, 2011) is the latest book by children's author, poet and psychotherapist Kathy Brodsky (illustrations by Cameron Bennett).  Ms Brodsky draws on her 40 years of experiences as a Clinical Social Worker to determine the theme and content of her books and Stover is no different.

Stover tells the story of a fitness inspired pig, who find happiness in eating right and working out doing lots of different activities at the gym--stair stepper, treadmill, yoga, step aerobics, spinning etc.--and truly finding joy in doing each and in noticing the benefits of his hard work ("Hooray! I pinch less!"). At the end of the book are 16 discussion question about food and fun that you can discuss with your children.

Here is the brief synopsis of Stover from the dust jacket cover:
Stover is a happy little pig with a secret life. He's a pig, so he loves playing in the mud, but once he's all cleaned up, get gets dressed for his "other" life.
See what he does to stay happy and healthy. He's quite a pig!
I was given a copy of Stover to read for this review. My 4 year old and I found it fun to read, and the pictures fit the story perfectly. It inspired more conversation about why he needed to eat more healthy food and how exercise is good for his body and more. Since 4 is a little too young to go into the gym and use that equipment--we talked about how he could get exercise--riding his bike, playing soccer, swimming, gymnastics and just running (he likes to run around the track with me).

I also noticed that this book was printed entirely on recycled paper "No trees were harmed in the making of this book." How awesome is that--what a way to help keep our environment "fit" as well!

Stover is a book that inspires a healthy lifestyle for those of all ages--it could even be motivating for adults to become more active and a fun book to read to our children.

I try to set a good example for them by letting them see my exercise - whether it's on the treadmill in the morning, coming to zumba class with me, or going in the bike trailer on a ride. hopefully setting a good example will help them think highly of exercise (now eating - that's another story!).
