2014 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration at Disneyland

Thank you to Disney for selecting my to attend the 2014 Social Media Moms Celebration, a conference fee was paid, items were received, opinions are honest. Personal photos used in this post may not be used by anyone without written permission.

It is no secret that our family attended the 2014 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration at Disneyland last week and I am excited to be able to share a few Disney behind the scenes details, a few of our photos and our own experiences at both parks.

The problem is there is so much I want to share that one post is just not an option.  In fact if I even tried it would turn out to be the length of a book and let's face it you would get bored and move on to something else.  So I will be devoting the next two days to all things Disney.

Before I start I want to know, what makes your family make the choice to visit a Disney Park?  The reason I ask is we have a six year old daughter (in advance I am sorry if you already know this story) and it seemed to me that as soon as she was born everyone would ask "When are you taking her to Disney" of course my response was simply "when she is a little older" down deep knowing I had no plans on ever making the trip.

Who would ever want to spend a week in a crowded park with screaming kids running loose, eating junk food, praying to find a show with air conditioning because I do not like hot humid weather, or standing in lines for hours for a ride that would last five minutes.  Yes, this is the image I had created in my head.  Then the email that every Mommy (and even a few Dad) Bloggers dream of getting; the golden ticket if you will which is an invitation to the 2013 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration at Walt Disney World.  I registered and justified it to myself by saying it was a work event.  Now I am the first to admit that making the decision to attend was one of the best choices I have ever made.  My entire outlook on the Disney brand has changed, with that first trip we stayed 8 days and visited all the parks that Florida offers, we returned in January for another six days and now we can cross Disneyland off our list since we just returned from five days at Disneyland and California Adventure.

Why do I share this story?  When I was invited to this years event I had a plan,  I was going to find out why families make the choice to visit a Disney Park.  Originally, I wanted to meet 10 families and talk to them about what brought them to the park that day, and come back and share their stories over 10 days.  For example, had they visited a park before, how far had they traveled, where would they be staying, would they be visiting both parks that day, did they have plans to return, had they been to Walt Disney World, what was their one must see or do while in the park my list of questions was long and the reality was quickly discovered that people wanted to talk and share their story and since I have no reservations about talking to people it would have been a very easy to accomplish just start up a conversation while waiting in line.

Like everything in life this was easier said than done I came across a few problems in my plan.  The biggest obstacle was not having enough time to talk to them before we made it to the front of the line.  The most unexpected was when we started talking, people wanted to know more about me than they wanted to share about themselves.  I guess it is exciting to meet a blogger (yes you can laugh) ultimately my plan did not work, but you can bet that the next time I am in a park I will have a plan that will work.

Until then I will share three stories with you.

The first is by far my favorite, while in line to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad I met a young lady, she is 21 years old married with three young children.  I was amazed to hear that she grew up in LA, yet this was her first visit to the park.  Her husband had grown up in Mexico and it was also his first day in the park.  When I asked how she had lived so close yet never been until this day she explained that she had only visited the local Six Flags because that is where the school she attended took their field trips and then she started her family and wanted to wait until they were a good age which she and her husband felt they now were which is why they made the choice to purchase season tickets for the entire family.  She went on to tell me that what sold them on Disney was the characters for the kids, her husband loves that there is no additional charge for fast passes and she liked that parking was included.  She also said that this was their first day in the park and the only plan they had was to grab a map and see where the day took them, I loved seeing the excitement in both her and her son.  I wish them the best summer at Disneyland and I hope to catch up with her on Facebook because I would love to see their photos as they visit the park this summer.

The second family I met was in line at Toy Story Mania, they also live in the area and had season passes and from the sounds of it they have for years.  The mother is an elementary school teacher who dreams of one day retiring and working at her local Build-a-Bear Workshop, their daughter I assume is around the 5th grade and according to her very proud parents is an excellent student.  The more we talked I learned they have family in Sikeston, Mo and love to make stops at Lambert's for throwed rolls when they come to town.  I would have loved to have had more time to visit with them, because as we exited the ride my husband and I said there is no doubt that we could be friends with them if we lived closer.

The third person I met was a lady with her child in line to meet Cinderella.  I learned that she was also local and grew up in the parks, I got the feeling that maybe a parent used to work there.  She was with a group that she broke away from to visit the princesses and to make a quick stop over at Pixie Hollow.  I loved how she said shared that growing up it she did all the "cool" rides and now that she has a young daughter who of course has other ideas of what a day at Disneyland should be so she feels as if she is reliving the park all over for the first time.

So what did I learn from this, admittedly not much but I met three wonderful families that I may or may not have taken the time to visit with.   I was surprised to find that most people that visit Disneyland are local, now this could be the time of year or maybe this is typical of the park.  I am sure that the next time I visit a park I will be interacting with more people because everyone has a reason for visiting and I love hearing all about it, but you want to hear about the conference and don't worry I am just getting started.
